Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS)

I have been in Sarawak for two years.
If I am not studying in UNIMAS, I will most probably miss out this beautiful land.
UNIMAS is known as the University Malaysia Sarawak.
It is the eighth university in Malaysia and built on 1992.

UNIMAS first opened its doors for apply is on 8th August 1993 to the first batch of students.
In that time, there were only two faculties open for students to apply, which were
(a) Faculty of Science Social (FSS)
(b) Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST).

There have four others faculties opened in the next year which include
(a) Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA)
(b) Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development (FCSHD)
(c) Faculty of Computer Science and Technology (FCSIT)
(d) Faculty of Engineering (FENG)

Until now, there are 11160 students studying in UNIMAS.
The number of students studying in this university is less compared to other universities.
This provides a better and unique environment for teaching, learning and research.

There are 8 faculties available included Faculty of Applied and Creative Arts (FACA), Faculty of Cognitive Science and Human Development (FCSHD), Faculty of Computer Science and Technology (FCSIT), Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB), Faculty of Engineering (FENG), Faculty of Medicine and Health Science (FMHS), Faculty of Resource Science and Technology (FRST), and Faculty of Social Science (FSS).

UNIMAS is top 10 universities in Malaysia 2012.

There are west and east campus in UNIMAS.
East campus nowadays is specialized for pre-university students while others will focus at the west campus. There are two symbolize constructions that represent UNIMAS.
These two symbols are the water towers and the bridge.
There are two water towers in UNIMAS which are the tallest in Sarawak.
There have two functions of water tower, first is filter the water used in UNIMAS and second is storing the water inside.
The second symbol is the bridge across the UNIMAS Lake known as the “Love Bridge” by UNIMAS students and located at the center of the West Campus.
You will enable to see many students spending their evening time around the bridge for several activities like jogging, kayak and others. The evening scene there is just amazing.

UNIMAS provide a better environment for hostel.
There are 8 hostels in UNIMAS and we named it as Kolej Allamanda, Sakura, Cempaka, Bunga Raya, Tun Ahmad Zaidi, Kenanga, Seroja and Kolej Perubatan.
There have 5 hostels in west campus UNIMAS, which include Kolej Allamanda, Sakura, Cempaka, Bunga Raya and Tun Ahmad Zaidi. While east campus UNMAS have 2, there are Kolej Kenanga and Kolej Seroja.
Kolej Perubatan is outside UNIMAS main campus (West and East Campus) and Kolej Seroja is mainly for Pra-University students.
Each Kolej comprises of apartments and each apartment can occupy at least 8 students except Kolej Seroja.
In every apartment, there are pantry, bathrooms, toilets, balcony and dining room. The design of hostel enables students enjoying a pleasant home.

There are many facilities available in UNIMAS include the basketball courts, swimming pool, bowling centre, tennis courts, squash courts and stadium. Students can spend their sparing time in various activities. There is also kayaking activity available in the UNIMAS Lake. Miao City - Kuching

Let’s zoom in our focus on the administrative capital of Sarawak, Kuching
Almost every tourist starts their tour in Kuching.
The name of the city, Kuching is believed to derive from the Malay word, Kuching which gives the meaning of cats.
That is why Kuching is also known as the cat’s city.
It is not hard to find cat statues as it is everywhere in the city.
In Chinese’s perspective, Kuching means harbor, deriving from the pronunciation “Gu Chin”.
In Kuching, there is Sarawak River that separating the north and the south part of the city.
It will be a wonderful experience to ride a sampan across the river.
You will be amazed by the beauty of the green environment.

As Kuching is a multicultural place, people in Kuching master in Multilanguage.
Most of the locals speak Malay and their ethnic tongue with English is their second or third languages.
For those who come from Peninsular Malaysia, you will realize that their Malay dialect is different with Malay language in Peninsular Malaysia.
This uniqueness is enough to be categorized as their own language, Bahasa Melayu Sarawak.

Life in Kuching is not as hectic compared to other cities especially Kuala Lumpur.
There is not much night life in Kuching.
The shops are most probably closed at 5pm except for the shopping malls and restaurants.
It is not common for the Kuching locals to spend their night time in mamak stall.
Therefore, mamak stall is rare in Kuching city.
There are many places that worth to pay a visit in Kuching.
Waterfront is now transformed into a landscaped esplanade.
Along the waterfront, you will see Chinese old temples, square tower, observation tower and Waterfront Park.

Land of Hornbills- Sarawak

Are people at Sarawak staying at tree houses?
Are boats the only transportation?
Is there any road in Sarawak?
These are probably the questions asked when we mention about Sarawak.

There are always typical impressions for those who never being in Sarawak.
For them, Sarawak is a place where there is only river and boats are the only transportation.
Sarawakians live in the forest and all the houses are built on the trees.
It is not surprising as Sarawak contains large tracts of tropical rain forest home to an abundance of plant and animal species.
But I am sure that you will be more impressed when you stepped on this Land of Hornbills – Sarawak.

Sarawak is the largest state in Malaysia.
The land area is even larger than area in Peninsular Malaysia.
However, Sarawak has the lowest population growth in Malaysia.
This gives life in Sarawak not as hectic compared to other states.
There are more than 40 sub-ethnic groups in Sarawak.
Each sub-ethnic has its own distinct language, culture and way of life.
The major ethnic groups included Iban, Chinese, Malay, Bidayuh, Melanau and Orang Ulu.
Multiracial people living harmony in a state receives the most attention from the outsiders and tourists towards Sarawak.

Sarawak is one of the world heritage areas. There are abundant natural resources such as rattan, palm leaves and bamboo. You will have the chance to see the largest flower in the world, Rafflesia. The tribal tradition and unfettered nature is the beauty of Sarawak.

There are many signature foods in Sarawak that you must give a try on it.
These include Sarawak Laksa and Kolok Mee.
Sarawak Laksa is different with what we ate in Peninsular Malaysia.
The Sarawak Laksa is bee hoon cooked in shrimp- based broth.
On the other hands, Kolok Mee is the light yellow egg noodles with barbecued meat sauce and black vinegar.
It is often served with minced meat and barbecued meat sliced.

About the weather, there is always hot and humid in Sarawak.
There is no much variation on the weather throughout the year.
It is encouraged to have your own umbrella as you will use it frequent in Sarawak.
Raining season falls on every October till February while March to September is the driest period.
